Projects

Develop facilitator manual from modules

The Centre developed and maintains a DTSC e-learning program consisting of 10 modules covering all aspects of caring for people with dementia. This project will see the development of a workshop facilitator manual based on the content of the on-line program.

Fellowships Program

This project builds upon and expands the Centre’s successful Fellowship program conducted during 2010-2013. The Centre will facilitate a national DTSC Fellowship program aimed at supporting health professionals from any care setting to translate knowledge into day to day practice. The objective of the Fellowship program is to develop an effective model for the translation of knowledge into practice, to improve the care of people with dementia and to increase the capacity of individual health professionals to effect practice change in their workplace through mentorship and support from the DTSCs.

Development, delivery and evaluation of an education for medical specialists working in the acute care sector

This project will build upon previous work undertaken by integrating knowledge gained regarding the needs of medical specialists and the venture into emerging media in the form of short multimedia videos (YouTube) aimed at providing key messages on targeted topic areas as identified by medical specialists. The project aims to improve the care of people with dementia by providing education that engages health professionals on areas directly relevant to their daily clinical practice.

GP Workshop program

This project will see the delivery of at least five, fully accredited workshops specifically for GPs. One workshop will be delivered in each DTSC jurisdiction in collaboration with the respective DTSC. The workshops will build upon previous workshops conducted by the Centre, Professor Dimity Pond and the DCRC’s Timely Diagnosis project and compliment the Centre’s on-line GP education program. At least one workshop will focus on issues concerning dementia in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) populations.

Develop, deliver and evaluate an education program for GP registrars (trainees)

Medical registrars are often one of the first points of contacts when persons with dementia are admitted to hospital. There is a lack of education provided in medical training to deal with the increase in the incidence of dementia in the community. A targeted education program that has shown previous success with medical students will be piloted, evaluated and implemented among GP registrars. This project will be conducted in phases over the next 3 years.

Developing, delivering and evaluating a targeted education program for GPs working in rural Victoria

The Centre’s partner organisations, Bendigo Health and Monash University were approached by General Practices in rural Victoria to assist GPs to improve their care of people with dementia. These discussions resulted in a proposal for a large project which includes extensive education for GPs and Practice Nurses. This project will see the Centre deliver and evaluate the education component of the large GP education and clinical project entitled: “An interventional research project aimed at improving the diagnosis, treatment, and general management of people with impaired cognition in the General Practices in rural Victoria”.

Dementia education to the acute care sector in collaboration with DBMAS Victoria

The Centre will work with DBMAS in Victoria to develop and deliver a workshop which provides the background dementia information necessary to increase the understanding of BPSD as symptoms of the disease. At least six workshops will be delivered to the acute care sector as a component of the DBMAS acute care expansion project.

Explore the issues relating to dementia in homeless populations and the dementia education needs of health professionals working with homeless people

The Centre will work with partner organisations to explore the issue of dementia in homeless populations and the education needs of health professionals involved in this sector.
