Dementia series: The timely diagnosis of dementia

This education was prepared by Dr Claire Berman, Dr John Crimmins and Dr Allan Shell (DCRC).  This dementia educational activity ‘discusses the assessment and investigation of the patient who presents with cognitive impairment. The various presentations and their associated comorbidities are discussed, as are the examination, laboratory and radiology investigations required to make a diagnosis of dementia and to differentiate between the various types of dementias. The development of a management plan includes not only the pharmacological and non-pharmacological aspects, but includes the carer perspective, longer term planning, legal implications and palliative care aspects.’  The ‘timely diagnosis of dementia’ is accessed at ThinkGP.

This activity is supported by DTSC (Vic &Tas), Dementia Collaborative Research Centres and Alzheimer’s Australia.
