Palliative care for people with dementia
A video recording of a seminar presentation by Ed Gaudoin – Clinical Nurse Consultant, Metropolitan Palliative Care Consultancy Service (MPaCCS), on 20 October 2015, for WA DTSC.
Overview of presentation:
- MPaCCS main brief – Assess the patient’s medical situation and psychosocial needs, advise and educate the staff looking after the resident, for as long as the staff require assistance.
- Early referrals are encouraged (before problems escalate).
- The service is NOT just cancer focused. Most of the time, we are handling patients with dementia, non-malignancies (cardio-vascular, respiratory, diabetes, end stage kidney and liver disease, HIV etc) or who are frail aged.
- Provide mentoring backup for RACF staff after the staff have attended a Talking About End Of Life education program
