LGBTI eLearning Module – coming soon!

LGBTI RainbowTickDTSC will soon be launching an eLearning module to assist workers across the health and aged care sector to become culturally competent in relation to working with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) people with dementia. It also aims to assist health and aged care services and organisations to become more inclusive of LGBTI people in their service provision.

This eLearning module is offered in four units:

  1.  Introduction to LGBTI
  2.  LGBTI lived experiences past and present
  3.  Considerations of care for older LGBTI people with dementia
  4.  Implementation to practice

Each module with accompanying quiz, takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.
The Key Learning Objectives are:

  1. To identify the range of sexual diversities in Australia
  2. To reflect on the lived experiences of LGBTI people, especially those who are part of the ageing population
  3. To recognize the diversity within the LGBTI community
  4. To integrate knowledge to be better able to provide care and services to LGBTI people in a culturally appropriate, respectful and inclusive manner

Why should your organisation become LGBTI Inclusive?

  • To improve the health and wellbeing of residents and clients
  • To improve the awareness and knowledge of the workforce
  • Become one of the leaders in the sector in responding to the needs of LGBTI people
  • Recognition on a national register as an LGBTI inclusive organisation if you achieve the formal Rainbow Tick Accreditation

It has been estimated that oENews Sept, LGBTI Graphf Australia’s population of 23 million, up to 11% (or 2,530,000) are LGBTI (Department of Health and Ageing 2012). This figure may be an under-representation as data gathering methods are not always consistent. Further, LGBTI people may be reluctant to disclose their sexual orientation, gender identity or intersex status.

Whilst LGBTI people equate to a minority of the population, they have a large impact on the population when you consider that each person has parents, siblings etc. Therefore LGBTI issues are wide reaching and important to understand and address.

The launch date for this new offering will be posted on the DTSC news page. Watch this space!
