WA seminar, November 2013 – Falls prevention for people with dementia

A WADTSC seminar presentation by Professor Keith Hill, Head of School, School of Physiotherapy and Exercise Science, Curtin University, on 20 November 2014.

Falls and fall related injuries are substantially more common for older people with dementia than for older people without cognitive impairment.  Despite this high risk of falls and injuries, people with dementia have been excluded from the majority of the more than 150 fall prevention randomised trials.  This presentation will review current research evidence in the area of preventing falls for people with dementia, and some promising recent research of several approaches to improving balance and walking stability in people with mild to moderate severity Alzheimer’s disease.
