Fellowship Program

9 May 2013

Over the past two years the Victoria and Tasmania Dementia Training Study Centre (VIC/TAS DTSC) has given seventeen health professionals from various health disciplines and care settings the opportunity to participate in a Fellowship Program.

The Fellowship Program aims to support a health professional to undertake a project aimed at improving practice, and translating research into day to day practice in the care of people with dementia.

Fellowships are awarded for a period of six months during which time Fellows will be provided with support from the VIC/TAS Dementia Training Study Centre team, a workshop on evidence-based practice and managing change, and mentorship from an expert in the care of people with dementia. The Fellowship also includes minor funding to facilitate the project.

The seventeen Fellow all successfully implemented and evaluated an evidence-based practice improvement activity in their workplace and the Centre’s evaluation indicated that the Fellowship Program is an effective model for up-skilling staff, changing attitudes and demonstrated early signs of practice change. These results will be the topic of a poster titles Friends with benefits: evaluation of a fellowship program – aim to translate evidence into care practice of people with dementia, produces for the upcoming Alzheimer’s Australia National Conference in Hobart on May 14-17 2013.
