WA seminar, September 2012 – Using art as a means of communication and cultural education in a residential aged care facility

A presentation by Heather Freegard and Ron Gidgup on 26 September 2012.

The seminar will describe the progress to date, lessons learned and challenges of this innovative and daring approach to cultural awareness learning. As part of the normal activity program, Aboriginal residents within a residential aged care facility participate in the preparation and production of culturally appropriate pieces of communal art. Led by renowned Noongah artist Ron Gidgup, residents, families and staff have opportunity to share stories that are reflected in the art and in the process learn about Aboriginal culture and history, and develop appropriate communication and care skills when interacting with Aboriginal residents.
