Cathy Greenblat’s photographic work presents a new way of looking at dementia and care. In this lecture she discusses the potential for photography to shape people’s views of dementia and those who are living with it. She argues that while visual images can be powerful learning tools, most address dementia only in terms of the losses people experience. Her photos seek to give positive lessons about quality of life and help reduce fear and stigma surrounding dementia. Using her own photos as examples, Professor Greenblat will also discuss the role of photography, music and art in dementia care.

Cathy Greenblat is a New York-born photographer and sociologist. She is currently Professor Emerita of Sociology at Rutgers University, New Jersey, a Visiting Researcher at the International Observatory of End of Life Care (IOELC), University of Lancaster, UK and an Artist in Residence at the Hospital Network of Nice, France (CHU de Nice). She has a BA from Vassar College and a PhD from Columbia University. She has been taking photographs of people with dementia and their families around the world since 2001.
