Dementia and the Ageing Prisoner

Dementia and the Ageing Prisoner

This lecture was presented by Monica Cations at the University of Wollongong, 9 March 2016.

The ageing prison population is increasing worldwide, almost doubling in the last decade in Australia.  Little is known about this group and the impact their ageing may have on their prison community and the justice system.  Older prisoners require physical and psychological monitoring, environmental modifications and tailored programs designed for their specific needs.

This presentation will looks at:

  • ageing prisoner demographics
  • complexities to do with their remand
  • policy implications of providing for their increasing cognitive and physical frailty
